REWIND Technique for Trauma

A Gentle, Non-Intrusive Way to
Heal from Trauma
Some experiences leave more than just memories — they leave a lasting imprint on your nervous system. Flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional shutdown, or sudden anxiety can all be signs of unresolved trauma.

But for many people, talking about what happened feels overwhelming - or even impossible.

The REWIND Technique offers a way to process trauma without having to relive it out loud.

It’s quick, gentle, and non-invasive — and many people report significant relief from distressing symptoms after just a few sessions.

What is REWIND?
REWIND is a neuropsychological technique that helps the brain safely “file away” traumatic memories so they stop intruding into everyday life. It uses visualisation and relaxation — not exposure or re-traumatisation.
Originally developed to treat PTSD in military veterans, it’s now used widely for:
-
Single-incident trauma (car accidents, assaults, medical events)
-
Complex or developmental trauma
-
Panic attacks and phobias
-
Flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts

You don’t need to explain what happened in detail for the REWIND process to work - it's designed to protect your sense of safety and control.

What to Expect in a REWIND Session
We begin with a gentle, guided conversation to establish trust and understanding. You won’t be asked to share graphic details or re-live the trauma verbally.
When you feel ready, we move into the REWIND process:
-
You’ll enter a relaxed, focused state using grounding and breathwork
-
I’ll guide you through a visualisation that allows the traumatic memory to be “re-coded” in your brain
-
You remain in full control the entire time — and can pause or stop at any moment

Many people find improvement in just 1–3 sessions.
REWIND can be delivered as part of ongoing therapy or as a stand-alone treatment for trauma-related symptoms.

REWIND – Common Questions
Do I have to talk about what happened?
No. That’s one of the main benefits of REWIND — it allows you to process trauma without needing to describe it in detail.
Is this like EMDR?
REWIND and EMDR are both trauma therapies that don’t rely on traditional “talk therapy.” But REWIND uses visualisation and deep relaxation rather than eye movements. It’s often gentler and more accessible for people who feel overwhelmed or shut down.
Can it be done online?
Yes — REWIND can be delivered safely and effectively via video call, as long as you have a quiet, private space and feel comfortable.
What kind of trauma is it suitable for?
REWIND is helpful for both single-event and complex trauma, including PTSD, panic attacks, flashbacks, and phobias. It can also help with residual trauma from medical procedures or long-term emotional distress.

Relief is Possible — Without Retraumatization
You don’t have to explain everything.
You don’t have to re-live it.
And you don’t have to carry it forever.
If you’re struggling with trauma, flashbacks, or memories that won’t let go, the REWIND Technique could help ease the weight — gently and effectively.
